FC Basel vs Sion
League: Swiss Super League
Date: Thursday, 18th May 2017
Time: Kick off at 18:45
Venue: St. Jakob-Park
For the eighth time in a row FC Basel won the national championship this season. Once again, there was no way around this club. Four seasons before the end of the season, the lead over the Young Boys Bern is seventeen points. And Basel have won only one of their last four Ligaspiele. However, the club has also lost none of these four matches. In the Super League, there was only one defeat in 32 games. In addition to seven points, there were 24 victories. In addition, Basel is the best offensive and defensive and, of course, is also the best home and away team.
It is understandable, however, that after the championship, the tension is a bit out. There were three draws in the home St. Jakob-Park, for example, against Vaduz, against Basel only in the third-minute stoppage time to the 2-2-Auslich came. The upcoming opponent Sion is, however, a welcome guest. Of 34 home games against the coming opponent, Basel has won 21 and only four lost. Last home Leite against Sion finished on the sixth Game Day of the Season 1997/1998 (!) And dated 02/08/1997. Since 24 home games in the Super League Basel is unbeaten against Sion.
Sion is currently third in the Super League and is thus on a European League qualifying place. In fifth place, which is no longer justified for international business, Sion has five points ahead of four remaining games. So it looks good on the qualification for Europe, but Sion will still have to pick up one or the other. However, Sion lost three games in a row. Only on the last weekend the club got the turn and got another three in the 2-0 win over Lugano. This victory was important in that Sion was able to swap places with Lugano.
It seems as if Sion could only win or lose in this season. With three draws in 32 games the club has by far the least. In addition, there were fifteen victories and fourteen defeats. Sion lost almost every second game, which is rather unusual for a table tournament. Against Basel, Sion has already played his three games in the current Super League season – and all three games have lost Sion. Basically, Basel have won the last eight direct duels in the Super League. In between, however, there were two victories for Sion – both in the trophy.
